Harry Kane makes Anfield admission and Tottenham demand before Liverpool clash

Harry Kane has told his Tottenham Hotspur teammates to be bold when they visit Anfield to take on Liverpool this weekend.

The Reds welcome Spurs to Merseyside knowing a victory will leapfrog them above their Champions League rivals and maybe take them as high as fifth.

While both clubs have endured underwhelming campaigns so far, they also stand an outside chance of securing a top-four spot. Liverpool enter the contest as favourites as a three-game winning run has sparked hope that their season can be salvaged.

The history book is also in the Reds’ favour. They have lost just once - a 4-1 defeat six years ago - in 22 fixtures versus Tottenham. Kane bagged a brace that day but he is yet to earn a win at Anfield.

Neither side can afford to surrender further ground in the Champions League race, with third-placed Newcastle United now nine points clear of Liverpool and eight of Spurs. Manchester United are one point behind Newcastle in fourth but do have at least one game in hand on the teams just below them.

Speculation regarding Kane’s future has plagued Tottenham’s season and, with just one year left on his contract, the rumours are likely to intensify once the season finishes.

But ahead of the clash with the Reds, the England captain remains focused on the task at hand, rallying his troops by urging them to be “brave” at Anfield - a ground Spurs have not won at since May 2011.

“We spoke about these two games this week,” Kane said. “Just getting results, finding a way to win, finding a way to come away with something. Liverpool’s going to be the same.

“Anfield is a very tough place to go. They’re in a similar position of fighting for the spots we’re fighting for, so a lot is riding on it. It’s down to us to recover and show the character we did in the second half and be brave away at Anfield.”
