Harry Kane leads Jermain Defoe tributes as Sunderland striker announces retirement

Some of the biggest names in English football have praised Jermain Defoe after the Sunderland forward announced his retirement with immediate effect. The 39-year-old released a statement on Twitter on Thursday morning confirming that his career spanning four decades was coming to an end.

Defoe has made six appearances in the red and white of Sunderland since returning for 'one last dance' at the end of the January transfer window. The striker is yet to break his goal scoring duck since returning to Wearside two months ago, but the transfer was always about more than just his goals.

Defoe struck up a rapport with Sunderland supporters that very few before have been able to achieve and his influence off the pitch should not go unnoticed. Ross Stewart has spoken at length about Defoe's impact in the Black Cats dressing room, as the Scot earned his first call-up to the international scene.

The Black Cats forward wrote his name into Sunderland's history books with memorable goals to secure Premier League survival and a long-range volley against Newcastle United is etched into the memory. Defoe scored 37 goals in 93 appearances during his first spell at the club.

Meanwhile, Defoe was also a success at the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Rangers during his professional career. The former England international struck over 200 goals in 600 games across a 22-year career and Alan Shearer is among many players to lead the tributes.

On Twitter, Shearer said: "Congratulations mate on a great career and good luck going forward." Jamie Carragher added: "Congratulations @IAmJermainDefoe on a great career & what a goalscorer you were! Good luck in the future. I used to love our battles!"

Chris Sutton said: "Well played Jermain Defoe. A superb finisher and top player. A career to be very proud of." Harry Kane added: "Top striker, top bloke and someone who gave me some great advice in my early career as well as his number 18 shirt! Happy retirement @IAmJermainDefoe."

Daniel Sturridge said: "Congrats on an amazing career man. All the best in the next chapter. Nuff respect my g."
