Being a striker in the Premier League can sometimes be all about the glory. Scoring that winning goal or being that centrepiece centre-forward for a club.
However, there are occasions where duos click and a pair will dominate in the league scoring together.
Those famous pairs of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, to Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard, these are a few examples of unstoppable relationships that have dominated eras of the top division in years gone by.
Now, atop that list of names is a new pair, that of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Son’s late goal against Leeds United on Saturday, assisted by a Kane ball over the top, was their 37th goal combination with one another.
It took both of them to top of the leaderboards, ahead of Lampard and Drogba, who had 36 goal combinations between them.
It marked the perfect sign off from a dominating Tottenham display, which saw Antonio Conte’s men respond well to their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Burnley in midweek.
The Italian coach was pleased with the performance after the game, saying: “For the first time I have seen my mark, about this system.
“The creation from one wing-back and the other wing-back scoring. It means that the work is starting to work. It was a good performance for us against a strong team that is not simple to play against.
“Today we played a really good game, good football. What I wanted to see today was the right spirit, the right character to fight and win the ball and duels, against a team that are masters in this situation.”
The desire for the win was something that was echoed by Son and Kane, who were interviewed on BT Sport after the game.
Despite breaking the combinations record in the Premier League, Son claimed how important the three points were to the team: “It’s a big honour [the record], I mean it’s fantastic. I mean, the record is also important, but what Harry said before, I think the three points because of midweek, the result was not the best or what we wanted.
"So I think we take, of course, the record, but most important thing was that we get three points today.”
That sentiment was repeated by Kane, who explained just how he and his strike partner have managed to combine so often: “I mean, we’ve been playing with each other now for a long long time and you know, we just understand each other’s games well and obviously when I kind of drop deep, Sonny knows kind of where to run and hopefully I’m able to put him in and you saw that for the last goal.
“We enjoy playing together, like we said, the most important thing is the team though and another fantastic display from everyone.”
Both players will be keen to keep adding to that tally, knowing they play an important part in what Conte is trying to build with the Lilywhites.
That isn’t the only record on the horizon though, as Kane’s goal has also edged him closer to Jimmy Greaves’ goalscoring record at the club, as well as Alan Shearer’s Premier League record.
