Harry Kane earmarked as Manchester United's prime striker target by Erik ten Hag

Harry Kane is Erik ten Hag's prime striker target to reinforce the Manchester United attack in the summer.

Sources say Ten Hag is intent on signing Tottenham talisman Kane, 29, as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Kane's Spurs future is uncertain again with the club certain to go a 15th successive season without any silverware. Although Tottenham are fourth in the Premier League table Liverpool only trail them by three points and have a game in hand.

Kane had intended to leave Tottenham in 2021 amid firm interest from Manchester City but had three years left to run on his contract at the time and Spurs blocked a move.

Realistically, United are the only Premier League club Kane could join in the summer as they are likely to have qualified for the Champions League and their priority is to sign a high-quality centre forward.

Acquiring Kane would be an onerous task as the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has repeatedly succeeded in refusing to sell the club's most coveted players to domestic rivals.

Bayern Munich are expected to be in the market for a striker and are another realistic option for Kane should he choose to move abroad.

United have not signed anyone from Tottenham since the then-club record £30.75million signing of Dimitar Berbatov on transfer deadline day in September 2008.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen remains of interest to United, while Ten Hag is also an admirer of Benfica frontman Goncalo Ramos and Mohammed Kudus of Ajax.

Ten Hag said at the start of the season he would prefer to sign English players but United's failure to qualify for the Champions League compromised the profile of players they were able to target.

"I would like to sign English players because I think there is only one criteria and that's quality in combination with the price," Ten Hag explained at the time. "It looks like English players are quite expensive. It's a fact you cannot deny. In the end, it's about quality."

Kane became Tottenham's all-time leading goalscorer last month and he is one goal away from claiming the England scoring record. Kane has won three Premier League Golden Boots and the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.

Marcus Rashford has tallied a career-best 26 goals this term but United's next highest scorer is Bruno Fernandes on eight and United have failed to score four goals in a single Premier League fixture so far this term.

United intend to sell current No.9 Anthony Martial, who has only played in 14 of their 43 matches this season and scored 14 goals in the last three campaigns.

Martial, 27, is out of contract next year but United have the option of an additional year.
