The Duke and Duchess of Sussex should refrain from using their titles after starting their new lives in California, says a royal historian.
Prince Harry and Meghan were bestowed the titles by the Queen after their May 2018 wedding.
In February 2021 the prince had several titles, including His Royal Highness, revoked by the monarch as the pair confirmed they had no plans to ever return as working royals.
Since then they have continued using their Duke and Duchess titles which has led to some people questioning if they should do so.
Now royal historian Marlene Koenig has described the situation as the “elephant in the room is the use of the title in business”.
She told Express.co.uk : “Perhaps it would have been kinder and wiser to have said at the time that in business they should use the surname Windsor, or Mountbatten Windsor, or Sussex…Meghan Sussex, Harry Sussex in their careers.”
In 2021 The Queen forced the pair to sever all official links with The Firm after they decided to renounce their duties and step away from public service for good.
Among them was Harry's honorary military appointments, such as Captain General of the Royal Marines he took over from his grandfather Prince Philip after he held the role for 64 years.
So too was the patronage of the National Theatre the Queen gifted to former actress Meghan in 2019 after holding it for 45 years.
A statement by Buckingham Palace said they are "saddened by their decision" but said Meghan and Harry "remain much loved members of the family."
Buckingham Palace said at the time: "Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.
"The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.
"While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family."
Earlier this year Prince Andrew was also stripped of the HRH titles but was allowed to continue to be known as the Duke of York.
In 1996 Harry’s mother Diana was also stripped of her HRH title but continued to be known as Princess of Wales which was recently bestowed on Kate.
In 1936, Edward VIII continued as the Duke of Windsor despite abdicating to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.
