Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's eviction from Frogmore Cottage is the "tip of the iceberg' and more royals will have to "fend for themselves", according to insiders.
It emerged earlier this month that the Sussexes were "requested to vacate" their Windsor home, which had been given to them by the late Queen.
However, they only lived in the cottage for six months before sensationally quitting as working royals and moving to California.
The couple was said to be "stunned" after learning their UK home was being taken off them and King Charles is believed to have started the eviction process on January 11, the day after Harry's controversial memoir Spare was published.
However, now it is being claimed that Harry and Meghan are not the only royals who could see changes to their living arrangements as the King continues to slim down and modernise over the next five years - and it's just the "tip of the iceberg".
The Evening Standard reports that Charles is keen to cut the number of royals with a dependence on the Crown, especially if they do not carry out duties, and that if relatives cannot afford where they are living, they should "cut their cloth".
One source told the publication: "The King is not some sort of housing association for distant relatives."
While another senior figure added: "A lot of practices that have evolved during the last reign will be changing.
"The King is not heartless or reckless, but if the family members are not part of the core family and not working for the crown, it is fair for them to house themselves and fund themselves."
It comes after royal expert and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine Ingrid Seward also previously told the Mirror that Charles is "well aware" having empty properties scattered around the country is "not a good look in these hard times".
Speaking about Harry and Meghan giving up Frogmore Cottage, she said: "Within the royal family nothing is impossible and duly an eviction order has been obtained to get them out of the cottage before their tenure is up.
"It would have to be with the assurance of the King who is only too well aware that having empty properties scattered around is not a good look in these hard times."
And with claims that Andrew has been offered Frogmore Cottage after reports he may be asked to give up Royal Lodge, Ingrid believes it is down to Charles' task of making "extensive savings".
She explained: "The property [Frogmore Cottage] is said to be earmarked for Prince Andrew, who does not want to move out of Royal Lodge a far superior, larger and more private residence that Andrew also pays rent for.
"But without his annual allowance of £250,000 from the late Queen which comes to an end in April, he might struggle to meet the terms of his lease which demands he keep the extensive property and 90-acre grounds in tip-top condition.
"The draconian solution proposed by the King’s advisors is that if Andrew moved into Frogmore.
"It's royal swings and roundabouts, but King Charles has been warned he needs to make extensive savings and this is just the beginning."
