Harris County Deputy Killed In Line-Of-Duty Collision

Law enforcement officials carry out an operation in Ibarra

Authorities in Texas have released more details regarding the tragic death of Deputy Investigator John Coddou, a 20-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred earlier this week when Coddou was struck by a truck while working at the scene of a minor crash on Highway 99.

According to a traffic report from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Coddou had positioned his patrol vehicle on the left shoulder of the highway with its emergency lights activated. While investigating the crash, a white Chevrolet Silverado 2500, driven by a known male who has not been publicly identified, approached the scene. The driver was reportedly talking on his cellphone hands-free and attempted a faulty evasive action to avoid Coddou's vehicle.

Tragically, the driver veered into the center grassy median where Coddou was standing, striking the deputy with the front right area of the truck. Coddou was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed deep sadness over Coddou's death, and a procession in his honor was held by the department. The Harris County Sheriff's Office's Vehicular Crimes Division is currently investigating the fatal collision to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Deputy Investigator John Coddou's dedication to serving the community for two decades has left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the residents of Harris County. His tragic death serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties to ensure public safety.
