The detective told her husband's teenage nephew the true extent of his father's crimes in the penultimate episode of the BBC series, with viewers calling it an award-winning performance.
In the episode, Ann tells Ryan how disgusted she was to learn he had been visiting his dad in prison over recent months, and informed him exactly what Tommy did to his late mother.
Ryan tries to explain his reasoning for visiting Tommy in prison, saying: "I get it is complicated, but he is my dad. I get that it was an abusive relationship with my mum, I get all that."
Ann snaps back, yelling: "We are not talking about relationships Ryan. He is a psychopath Ryan. He is incapable of relationships. The only relationship he has got is with himself inside his crippled little head.
"He is a psychopath. All love means to him is a weakness in people that he can use to exploit them with. He impregnated her to humiliate and terrify her. You weren't wanted, You were very big time not wanted.
"Do you have any idea what Catherine did for you? They were all telling her to put it in care, put it up for adoption, but she refused. She was the only one big enough and decent enough to take you on.
"Despite what the subhuman, brain-dead moron did to her daughter and now he is using you and you are letting him. He is using you for no other reason than to upset Catherine. He twists the knife because it amuses him. He can't help it but he does not give one shiny f*** about it."
Most fans were delighted to see someone finally tell Ryan the truth about his late mother's experience with Tommy, but mostly they were impressed by Charlie's acting, calling for her to win a BAFTA.
One viewer wrote on Twitter: "Anne Gallagher’s pained, vitriolic, furious monologue was heartbreaking in about 5 different ways, and amazing acting, but let’s not overlook Daniel’s silent, stricken face as he watched it all just… tumble out. Baftas for all!! #HappyValley."
A second wrote: "She may not have had much airtime in this series but that one speech from Anne was well worth the actor’s salary alone! #HappyValley."
Another raved: "Loved Anne’s scene tonight. Ooh she’s such a good actress. Really felt her anger and sadness through my screen. #HappyValley"
A fourth said: "In a show absolutely bursting with acting and writing talent, I have to say Anne’s speech was the highlight for me tonight! #HappyValley"
On the show Charlie's character Ann is in a happy relationship with formidable policewoman Catherine's son Daniel, however, she is still haunted by her past trauma.
Ann was first introduced in series one after being kidnapped by Tommy Lee Royce following orders from Nevison Gallagher's accountant, Kevin Weatherill in a sick tiger kidnap plot.
During the traumatic ordeal, Ann was raped by Tommy but later managed to process the events which she had to endure before joining the police.
In her other acting work, Charlie Murphy is best known for her depiction of trade unionist Jessie Eden in Peaky Blinders.
The 34-year-old actress also starred as Siobhán Delaney in RTE drama Love/Hate, a role which led to her being named Best TV Actress at the 2013 Irish Film and Television Awards.
