Happy Valley star Con O’Neill has opened up about the popular BBC drama’s final, which will hit TV screens this weekend. Being fairly coy with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on ITV’s This Morning, the 56-year-old actor did say that he's had a surge of “bizarre” messages whilst the series has been going out.
“So I was in New Zealand and then in LA and then, came back and as soon as I got off the plane here, people [were whispering]”, Con said, “And I’m getting some bizarre DMs (direct messages) and mates texting me with ideas about who he is and what’s going to happen.”
Over the course of series three, Con’s character Neil Ackroyd has been at the centre of a storyline in which he is responsible for reconnecting Ryan Cawood (Rhys Connagh) with his evil father, Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton). There is a theory that Neil could, in fact, be Tommy’s own father. Read more about that here.

Although he refused to give anything away about the series finale, Con did stress his admiration for the show’s writer, Sally Wainwright. He told Phillip and Holly: “When I read the script for the last episode, it blew my mind. Sally has written an extraordinary ending to this show.”
Happy Valley’s final episode will reacquaint lead character Catherine Cawood with her grandson’s twisted father, Tommy Lee Royce. A trailer that came out earlier this week gave viewers an insight into what they can expect from the episode. Here are five things that we spotted in it.
Happy Valley concludes at 9pm on Sunday, February 5 on BBC One. For more TV and showbiz stories, subscribe to our newsletter here.
