Did you know that March 17 was chosen as St Patrick's feast day (now better known worldwide as St Patrick's Day) as this was the day the patron saint of Ireland is said to have passed away, in the year 461.
And the modern tradition of dyeing rivers and waterways green began in Chicago in 1962, not to celebrate the city's Irish connections but actually to trace the source of a sewage leak! We won't dwell on that one for too long.
