Happy Sawan Shivratri! Sawan is considered to be the most lucky month of the year, by the Hindu community. Monday is the day on which Lord Shiva is worshipped through this holy month. The practice of visiting temples and making offerings of milk, flowers, holy water, and bail leaves to Shivan is undertaken. These Mondays that fall during this month are known as Sawan Somwar. Sawan Shivratri occurs on Triyodashi tithi in Krishna Paksha in Sawan Maas. This year Sawan Shivratri is observed on July 26,2022.
The story behind this day is that Lord Shiva got Ganga Jal from Gaumukh to Haridwar. As a result, on this day, Kanwariya worshippers travel to river Ganga on foot. They carry Gangajal or Kanwar on their shoulders to offer it to lord Shiva. Unmarried women follow the Solah Somawar fast during this time in an effort to attract husbands who share Lord Shiva's virtues.
