The January air is super chilly and people are eagerly awaiting the festival of Lohri – to dance around bonfires, beat the cold and enjoy delicious popcorns, rewaris and peanuts with their loved ones. People dress up in their traditional best, whilst covered with shawls, sweaters and caps. It is perhaps the biggest first festival of a new year.
Also known as the harvest festival, the joyous day also marks the beginning of the end of winter and the arrival of warmer weather. Lohri is also said to be the shortest day of the year. Lohri is primarily a Punjabi festival and mostly celebrated in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. For many Punjabi families, the first Lohri of a married couple or a newborn baby is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur.
