An ice show by two-time Olympic figure skating gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu opened on Friday in Rifu, Miyagi Prefecture, aimed at raising the spirits of his native Tohoku region.
The show's title "Yuzuru Hanyu Notte Stellata" is derived from Italian for "starry night," and was planned as a "message of hope" like the stars that shone in the night sky that Hanyu saw following the Great East Japan Earthquake that devastated the region exactly 12 years ago on Saturday.
In the show, Hanyu skates to the song "Notte Stellata," which he used for the exhibition gala at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, and the well-known tune "Haru yo, Koi" (Come, spring), which expresses his hopes for reconstruction of the region.
He also performs an act with Olympic gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura.
