Hannibal responds to Erik ten Hag question after Manchester United loanee scores in Birmingham win

Hannibal insisted that he is focused on performing for Birmingham City after the Manchester United loanee scored his first professional goal on Friday night.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined the Championship club on a season-long loan last summer, has featured in every match he has been available for since joining the Midlands outfit. He grabbed his first senior goal as John Eustace's side secured a 2-0 win over rivals West Bromwich Albion.

As Hannibal lined up a free-kick from the right, it appeared as though he was going to cross the ball into the box. However, as he raised a hand towards his teammates, the youngster spotted a gap at the near post and went for goal instead. Goalkeeper David Button scrambled across, but was unable to keep the ball out.

Hannibal registered the assist for Birmingham's other goal on the night, with the midfielder coming off after 71 minutes following a stellar display at St. Andrew's. After the game, he expressed his delight at finally getting on the scoresheet - while also suggesting that he was hopeful United manager Erik ten Hag was watching.

"It was a great game first, a good derby," he told Sky Sports. "I had the chance to score and I'm very happy. The atmosphere was really nice, I just have to enjoy the moment.

"There was no message [to shoot for the free-kick], the only message was in my head. I saw the goalkeeper was too high so I acted like I was going to cross so I shot."

He added: "We are a big family. When someone needs help, we are always there. When things get hard, we stick together. I'm sure he (Erik ten Hag) has Sky, but I just need to focus until the end of the season and we will see what happens in the summer."

Hannibal has played three times for United but he will be hoping to be more involved with the first-team next season, especially if he keeps performing well for Birmingham between now and the end of the campaign.
