What the permit actually asks of you

Getting to Hanle is not a matter of booking a flight and showing up. The village sits inside the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a protected area requiring an Inner Line Permit. Indian nationals can obtain this through the Deputy Commissioner's office in Leh or via the online Ladakh ILP portal. The process is not complicated, but it demands lead time, and it demands that you have already decided, firmly, that you are going. The permit is the bureaucratic version of a question: are you serious about this?
