Hamilton sends direct message to Ferrari as F1 title race heats up

  • Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has urged his Ferrari team to apply pressure on Mercedes and Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli as he aims to overturn a 50-point deficit in pursuit of a record-breaking eighth world title.
  • Returning from the summer break at the Dutch Grand Prix with 12 rounds remaining, the British driver is looking to chip away at the lead of 19-year-old Antonelli, who is striving to become the youngest champion in F1 history.
  • Hamilton praised the young Italian driver for showing no obvious weaknesses so far this season, while noting that competing at age 19 comes with fewer external life pressures, making it relatively easier to focus on racing.
  • Following a mixed start to his Ferrari tenure that included a victory in Barcelona alongside frustrating, penalty-blighted races in Belgium and Hungary, Hamilton acknowledged that both he and the team need to improve in the second half of the year.
  • Expressing confidence in Ferrari's ongoing car development, Hamilton emphasised that the team is capable of bridging the performance gap to Mercedes as the title race resumes.
