Newmains United boss Davie Menelaws reckons Saturday’s friendly against Hamilton Accies will show his young players the levels they need to get to.
The former Queen’s Park, Carluke Rovers and Cambuslang Rangers striker believes the clash against Championship side Accies is almost a unique chance for his side to show what they can do against a side of that calibre, and how to get to the next level.
Newmains host the game at Victoria Park for the 3pm kick-off in one of two games Accies XIs will play on Saturday.
And Menelaws said: “It’s brilliant. The reason I took on the game is because I’m looking to promote a lot of young boys this season, put them in the shop window and try and get them improved and move them on to bigger and better things.
“Getting an opportunity to play against a professional team – especially of the calibre of Hamilton – is probably a once-in-a-lifetime thing for these boys to do.
“It’s great experience for them, and it will show them the levels that they need to get to, and be able to get to, if they put the effort, work-rate and desire in.”
Menelaws added: “It will be a brilliant test, and it’s about levels.
“Obviously Hamilton are a full-time team, a Championship side, who were in the Premiership.
“At the end of the day it’s 11 individuals against 11 individuals.
“But for my guys it’s about looking and taking on board everything they’ve got, and seeing what it takes to get to the next level, like playing at that level for Hamilton.”
