Hamilton Accies boss 'over the moon' for goal hero Ryan One

Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin heaped praise on teenager Ryan One after the striker climbed off the bench to put his side into the SPFL Trust Trophy final.

One netted in the first period of extra time to win the game, after Dario Zanetta's first-half opener was cancelled out by Ross Irving's deflected effort in the second half.

That puts Hamilton into the final to play the winner of Raith Rovers' tie against Dundee tomorrow night, and Rankin is delighted.

He said: "I don’t know if I enjoyed it but the boys certainly did, judging by the atmosphere in the dressing room.

“We put a 16 year old on the pitch to try and win the game, he did that, and you have to take your hat off to Ryan One.

“He left school in the summer, came in here and scored the winner in a semi-final to take the club to a final.

“I’m absolutely over the moon for the academy, Ryan One and everything the club stands for, getting someone like that to score the winner in a semi-final.

“I thought we played some really good football at times, created some really good chances.

“I’m disappointed with the goal but fair play to the players, that’s the second time we’ve gone to extra-time and the second time they’ve got a result out of it."

Rankin added: "It's great to get into a final but there's no time to enjoy that. You enjoy it when you win finals.

"It's a massive boost for the players. I said to them there's a lot of them in their early 20s and teens, but to get an opportunity to play in a cup final so early in their career will stand them in good stead."
