Hamas has issued a statement warning of potential Israeli plans to conduct a hostage rescue operation similar to one carried out in Gaza's Nuseirat camp in June. The internal statement, dated Nov. 22, revealed that Hamas threatened to 'neutralize' the captives if any such action were to take place.
The group's military wing, Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, circulated the statement to its factions, instructing operatives to tighten the living conditions of the captives and activate neutralization orders in response to any Israeli incursion.
Israel has not provided an immediate response to Hamas' warning. However, Defense Minister Israel Katz was quoted in Israeli media stating that pressure on Hamas was mounting, hinting at a potential advancement in hostage negotiations.
The Nuseirat rescue operation in June resulted in the liberation of four hostages held by Hamas since October 2023. The raid, which Palestinian officials claimed led to the deaths of over 200 individuals, marked one of the deadliest Israeli assaults during the conflict.
Israel initiated its campaign in Gaza following attacks by Hamas-led fighters on Israeli communities in October 2023, resulting in significant casualties and hostage-taking. The military offensive has since claimed the lives of more than 44,500 Palestinians and caused extensive destruction in Gaza.
Hamas emphasized that it holds Israel accountable for the fate of the captives and urged its operatives to follow instructions without considering the potential consequences. The group's heightened alertness underscores the escalating tensions in the region amid fears of further hostilities.
