Hamas has strongly criticized the United States for utilizing its veto power to block a draft resolution that aimed to grant Palestine full membership in the United Nations. The draft, put forth by Algeria on behalf of the Arab Group, garnered support from 12 countries but was ultimately thwarted by the US veto.
In a statement issued early Friday local time, Hamas condemned the US's actions, asserting that the veto undermines the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and statehood. Hamas further accused the US of siding with what it referred to as the 'fascist occupation entity' of Israel.
Hamas expressed concern that the US's stance is leading to its isolation from the international consensus that advocates for Palestinian rights. The organization called upon the global community to exert pressure on the US to reconsider its position and lend support to Palestinian aspirations for an independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement from Hamas also extended gratitude to Algeria, the Arab Group, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and non-aligned nations that stood in solidarity by endorsing the resolution.
