Back in late 2021, Halle Berry starred in and made her directorial debut with Bruised, a sports drama that was released exclusively to Netflix subscribers. Although met with mixed critical reception, Bruised ended up hitting the #1 spot on the platform, and the X-Men actress had intended to follow it up with a sci-fi movie called The Mothership. However, word’s come in that Netflix has scrapped this next feature’s release despite already filming it.
Originally reported by Jeff Sneider, THR has confirmed that The Mothership, which filmed in 2021, will not be completed because Netflix decided not to move forward with the “extensive reshoots” needed to complete the movie. With this decision, the streamer is pulling the same kind of move that Warner Bros. Pictures did with Batgirl, Scoob! Holiday Haunt and Coyote vs. Acme, with those three movies also having been scrapped (for tax write-off purposes) despite completing filming. However, Coyote vs. Acme is now being shopped around to other distributors following public outcry, though that doesn’t appear to be an option for The Mothership.
Directed and written by Bridge of Spies scribe Matthew Charman, this now-unreleased sci-fi movie was going to follow Halle Berry’s Sara Morse, a single mother whose husband mysteriously disappeared from their rural farm one year prior. After discovering an extraterrestrial object underneath their home, Sara and her children hopes that this can help them learn the truth about what happened to the husband/father. Berry was joined in The Mothership’s cast by Molly Parker, John Ortiz and Omari Hardwick.
Although things didn’t work out on The Mothership, this doesn’t mean Halle Berry’s time at Netflix is done. Quite the opposite, as one of her upcoming movies, The Union, which co-stars Mark Wahlberg, is already lined up for the platform. Still, it’s a shame that Netflix decided that pouring in the extra resources for reshoots on The Mothership wasn’t worth the effort. Hopefully, as has started to become the case with Warner Bros., this doesn’t start becoming a common trend at the streaming service.
As far as Halle Berry’s other recently-released work besides Bruised goes, 2019 saw her acting opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, and there was talk about her assassin character Sofia possibly getting her own spinoff. Then in 2022, she led the sci-fi movie Moonfall, which was directed by Roland Emmerich and co-stared Patrick Wilson, Michael Peña and Donald Sutherland, among others. The former can be streamed with a Peacock subscription, while the latter can only be purchased or rented digitally.
