Halifax says customers 'can close accounts' if unhappy with latest changes

Halifax have hit back at customers who are unhappy with its latest changes.

The banking giants told customers they can "close their accounts" if they disagree with their values after some hit out at a policy to include pronouns on staff name tags. Halifax took to Twitter to share the latest update but was hit with a barrage of angry comments.

They shared an image of 'Gemma's' name badge showing her pronouns of she/her/hers underneath. In response, one critical user accused the bank of “alienating” people while others threatened to close their accounts over the "woke" change.

Responding to one angry customer, a Halifax spokesperson said: "We strive for inclusion, equality and quite simply, in doing what’s right. If you disagree with our values, you’re welcome to close your account."

Another spokesperson said the bank wants to "create a safe and accepting environment that opens the conversation around gender identity.” They added: "We care about our customers and colleagues individual preferences. For us, it’s a very simple solution to accidental misgendering."

Adding pronouns to badges is optional for all workers, which the bank hopes will support colleagues to be themselves and feel included.
