Half of country taken out of snow danger zone as Met Eireann updates weather warnings

Half of the country has been taken out of a snow danger zone after Met Éireann updated its forecast for the week.

The national forecaster issued an updated status yellow low temperature/ice warning, which up until yesterday, was set to affect the entire country, brining with it snow and sleet.

The new low temperature/ice warning is in place for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Connacht, Longford, Louth, Meath and Westmeath, from 9pm Tuesday March 7 to 9am the following morning.

Met Éireann warned: "Hazardous conditions due to freezing temperatures. Icy stretches on roads and footpaths."

Meanwhile, a fresh status yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for both Cork and Kerry by Met Eireann, taking effect from midnight Wednesday until 12pm in the afternoon.

The national forecaster said: "Patchy sleet or snow overnight and Wednesday morning. Potential for hazardous conditions on some roads and footpaths."

A snow and ice warning continues to remain in place for Northern Ireland, who are suffering the same effects of an artic airmass sweeping across the UK bringing as much as 20cm of snow in places.

Yesterday, the UK Met Office said: "In excess of 20cm of snow could accumulate over high ground in Scotland and more than 5cm is likely to accumulate even to lower levels in the northeast of the UK.

"While Northern Ireland will initially escape large accumulations of snow, 2cm could settle in some spots on Monday night, most likely over higher ground and over northern parts of Northern Ireland."

For Northern Ireland, Met Éireann has relayed the UK Met Office's warning for snow and ice coming to Antrim, Down, Tyrone and Derry overnight on Tuesday, with Armagh and Fermanagh, lucky enough to escape the snow.

They said: "Snow showers and ice may lead to some minor travel disruption."
