Haiti has declared a state of emergency in response to a surge in gang violence that has led to a series of disturbing incidents, including kidnappings, killings, and looting. The situation escalated further with two prison breaks occurring over the weekend, prompting authorities to implement a curfew.
According to the United Nations, approximately 3,500 prisoners managed to escape from the National Penitentiary in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Reports indicate that the escapees were aided by heavily armed individuals who engaged in a confrontation with law enforcement officers. Despite efforts by the police to intervene, they were unable to prevent the mass jailbreak.
