Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers back at work after cancer fight thanks to key diet change

Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers says he has bounced back from his cancer and is back at work thanks to a sauerkraut diet.

The TV chef, 65, revealed he has been loading up on the fermented cabbage and other gut-friendly grub to boost his immune system.

Dave said: “It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really what food I’ve been having.

“At some stage I need to put weight on but I need things to boost my immune system.

“So I’ve been eating a lot of sauerkraut. It really works for me – sauerkraut, kimchi and meatballs. I live by it. It’s a probiotic and good for the immune system and keeps you regular. I love it. It’s the healthy eating that does it.”

The TV chef was out and about with co-star Si King for the annual Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards on Thursday night, where they were named Personalities of the Year.

Dave is now on the road to recovery after months of barely being able to eat due to his chemotherapy after being diagnosed last year.

The chemo made him lose his hair, including his signature beard, but now it’s back as he returns to the spotlight.

He has previously told how the gruelling treatment made him lose weight and put him off his food, despite describing himself as a “glutton”.

Now he says: “We got back filming this week, a new TV series, and it is a huge step back to normality and winning an award. I got diagnosed last March so it’s been over a year.

“It’s a work in progress and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike.”

The night out with Si at the awards came just weeks after Dave returned to ITV ’s This Morning for the first time since revealing his cancer diagnosis in May last year. On the show he and Si whipped up some lamb koftas with a wholemeal couscous salad and lemon and tahini dressing.

The pair are now also preparing to hit the road to promote their new cook book, The Hairy Dieters’ Eat Well Every Day. Unveiling it online last month, Dave said: “I’m so proud of it’.

Simon added: “This is a special book this, hope you enjoy it!”
