Hairy Biker Dave Myers makes vital diet change amid cancer battle as he returns to work

TV favourite Dave Myers has told how of his delight at being back at work following gruelling treatment for cancer and reveals the vital part food is playing in how he feels.

The chef, one half of The Hairy Bikers, explained his focus is currently upon boosting his immune system and that healthy eating is key - with sauerkraut featuring highly in his foods of choice. The 65-year-old, who has undergone chemotherapy following his cancer diagnosis last year, says he's having the fermented cabbage and the likes of kimchi and meatballs to boost his immune system, reports The Mirror.

He said: “It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really what food I’ve been having.

“At some stage I need to put weight on but I need things to boost my immune system. So I’ve been eating a lot of sauerkraut."

He added: "It really works for me - sauerkraut, kimchi and meatballs. I live by it. It’s a probiotic and good for the immune system and keeps you regular. I love it. It’s the healthy eating that does it.”

The chef, who recently made a return to TV on This Morning, where he and his Hairy Bikers co-star Si King made a lamb koftas dish, was out with King again on Thursday night for the annual Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards, where they were named Personalities of the Year.

His hair, including his trademark beard, was lost during his chemotherapy treatment - which also put him off food, leading him to lose weight - but is now back and he says: “We got back filming this week, a new TV series, and it is a huge step back to normality and winning an award.

"I got diagnosed last March so it’s been over a year. It’s a work in progress and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike."

He and King are now also set to hit the road to promote their new cookbook The Hairy Dieters’ Eat Well Every Day, news of which was announced online last month, with Myers saying: “I’m so proud of it’ and King adding: “This is a special book this, hope you enjoy it!”
