Hairdresser explains her strict rule on shampooing twice - and heat damage warning

A hairdresser has shared her wisdom on keeping locks healthy and argues we've all been using shampoo wrong.

Proper hair maintenance is a key part of many daily routines as not many of us are blessed enough to wake up with perfect tresses already.

Thankfully, the hair guru has taken to TikTok to reveal some key things she always does to keep her hair in tip-top shape, and all the habits she'd avoid.

The stylist, who goes by the username @thehairgirlnz, started by saying: "Number one, I would never wear my hair in a sleek bun or ponytail more than once in a blue moon.

The persistent tugging from a ponytail could cause traction alopecia (@thehairgirlnz/TikTok)

"This can cause traction alopecia, a receding hairline, and extreme breakage on the hair," she claims.

Traction alopecia is damage to the hair follicle caused by excessive tugging or pulling.

For her second trick, she revealed a rule about heat protectants which you might not have even considered.

"We all know what it's like when we burn our skin, imagine what it's doing to our hair if we're not using thermal protection, you're going to end up with some much breakage," she added.

She adds that you should never use heat tools above 200 degrees as this could cause serious damage to your hair.

The stylist then moves onto how many times you should shampoo your hair each week.

"You need to shampoo your hair twice in order to get the benefits from your shampoo, it will also help with oiliness so you will find you will not need to wash it as often," she said.

Finally, she said she would never use hair elastics in her hair which can cause more breakage than claw clips.

In response, another TikToker was quick to rebuke some of these tips - but the stylist pleaded with her to use them.

One person wrote: "I wash my hair every 10 days, use elastics, use a straightener, and curler and not protective, I'm in my 30s and hair is lush."

The stylist replied: "Girl, heat protectant, imagine how much more lush your hair would feel."
