I never used to be a fan of three quarter tops. They always reminded me of when I would outgrow my clothes when I was younger, but my mum wouldn’t want to take to shopping to replace them until I had absolutely worn them to death. “You can wear it as a three quarter top!” she would say. These days, I understand she was being a versatile queen. But back then, I thought it was wildly uncool.
I’ve since grown up, and so has my taste. Now, I love the shorter sleeves of a three quarter top, especially when it’s paired with capris. Call me a three quarter reform, but these days, I love the style. And it couldn’t be better timing, since three quarter tops are having their time to shine in the fashion spotlight now.
This style boomed during the peak of ’90s minimalism, but before then, it was a photo of Jane Birkin in 1973, balancing on a tight rope, practising for the cirque-inspired charity gala, the ‘Gala de l’Union des Artistes’, that set the ballet-inspired top as a trend the first time around.
In the ’90s, it was brands like Gap and Calvin Klein that hit that perfect sweet spot between the decade’s obsession with minimalism and its love for athletic casualwear. And now the three quarter top is back for another round in the spotlight.
Casual, but more elevated than a simple T-shirt or basic long sleeve, these tops are laid back in a cute, preppy way. And two of the main culprits for propelling this style back into the spotlight are none other than Aussie brands With Jéan and Mode Mischief.
With Jéan’s Lana Top ($227.45) has caught the eye of two of our favourite fashionable celebs, Kaia Gerber and Hailey Bieber, who have both posted Instagram shots of them wearing the baby blue three quarter sleeve top. It’s now one of the brand’s best-selling pieces, and it’s easy to see why — the fitted silhouette, soft pastel shade and subtly shrunken sleeves make it feel equal parts nostalgic and polished.
Mode Mischief’s take on the trending style has had its viral moment on socials, too. The Velina Top ($149) is quite similar to With Jéan’s version, with a v-neckline, fitted torso and pastel colour palette. While the northern hemisphere girlies are declaring it a spring staple, those of about to enter the trenches of winter have been able to style it as a transeasonal piece.
