A man is on the run after a dramatic shootout with police in suburban Toowoomba yesterday afternoon.
The incident occurred when officers spotted a suspected stolen car just before 2pm in Harristown.
A Queensland police spokesperson said one of the occupants allegedly fired shots towards the officers, striking their vehicle.
Police returned fire, before the silver Mitsubishi SUV allegedly speed away.
A short time later a man "with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound" sought treatment at the Toowoomba Hospital.
He remains under police guard.
A Queensland police spokesperson said his injuries were non-life threatening.
While shots hit the police car, no officers were injured in the confrontation.
Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers said "police returned fire" and struck one of the people in the car.
He said the officers were "brave" and they were "extremely lucky" not to have been killed.
"The hail of bullets that sprayed the police vehicle narrowly missed the police inside," he said.
Mr Leavers said both officers had the organisation's support.
"I have known one of the officers for over 25 years and we all recognise just how dangerous, difficult and unpredictable policing can be. However we as police will always put our lives at risk to keep our communities safe."
The incident will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command and overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
Police had told residents in Blackwood, Derwak and Dempsey streets to stay in their homes but that advice has since been lifted.
