A woman has died after the car she was driving collided with a cattle truck in the New South Wales north west.
Police say the car collided head-on with the truck, and the woman in her 40s died instantly.
The Volunteer Rescue Association freed a baby who was trapped in the car's back seat.
"The baby in the rear of the vehicle was uninjured, but as a precautionary has been flown to Newcastle Hospital," Acting Inspector Clint Williams said.
He said the 36-year-old male truck driver, who had minor injuries, was also flown by helicopter to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.
Some cattle also died in the crash, and some had to be euthanased by police.
"It was a pretty horrific scene for the [officers] to attend," Acting Inspector Williams said.
"Obviously the extent with animals as well, having to put them down and things like that. That's a terrible thing to have to do.
"Police have obviously responded to a fairly traumatic experience, and they will receive the required treatment and monitoring."
The Gwydir Highway was closed in both directions, but has now reopened.
