Gutted Midlothian owner shuts popular brewery as bills soar in cost of living crisis

Another local business is going under as the cost of living and inflation continues to soar.

The Top Out Brewery in Loanhead has made the regrettable decision to close after Christmas and New Year as “the outlook of further rising costs is pretty grim.”

“We have made the very tough and sad decision to close the brewery at the end of this year. It has been a tough few years running a business whilst trying to make a living. As for many small businesses, the outlook of further rising costs is pretty grim and already putting us on a back foot for 2023. It is simply no longer sustainable,” Top Out Brewery said in an announcement.

“All we ever wanted was to produce great beer, enjoy the process and create jobs, which we achieved. So we feel proud, and are planning to go out on a high.”

Top Out Brewery has been in Midlothian since 2013 when founder and head brewer Michael Hopert moved to the area.

Our brewery and brand is closely entwined with the great outdoors, especially our stunning Scottish mountains,” the Top Out website said.

“At the foot of the Pentlands south of Edinburgh, you’ll find our wee brewery where we combine German and Scottish influences to create tasty and great quality beers.”

‘Maps, mountains and beer’ is the ethos of the company, but after nearly a decade in the community, the passion is no longer enough to keep the doors open.

“We would like to say many thanks for your support over the past 9 years, and please keep supporting your local breweries, pubs and independent retailers,” the team said.

The brewery has planned to “go out on a high” at the Jolly Judge tonight (18 November) for a tap takeover. The website is also up-to-date with remaining stock, and the brewery has said it will continue to trade until Christmas/New Year.
