Gutted Edinburgh locals told only skatepark of its kind in city will close

Members of a group who use Transgression Park in Ocean Terminal have said they are "gutted" over its closure.

This comes after landlords agreed to a long term lease with Club 3000 Bingo Hall, with the skatepark set to close up by the end of July. Currently, Transgression is the only indoor venue of its kind in Edinburgh where children can train under supervision and receive training.

Nikita Sobolev, one of the users of the park who helped organise the petition to fight its closure, said the spot is "more than just a skate park".

He told Edinburgh Live: "It's got a community spirit that keeps people coming in from as far as Perth and Dundee.

"I've made a lot of friends there. It's not just about exercise, which is also a big plus.

"The park is a place for people to learn, but it also helps people get into the habit of staying active and keeping healthy."

Nikita told us regular users range between six-years-old to over 60 years-old. He continued: "There's a broad range of skills, ages and people coming in to use the space.

"There is another outdoor skate park, but we're in Scotland so that's not usable most of the time. The nearest indoor one would be in Glasgow.

"The great thing about Transgression was that it was easy for us to get to, especially since the trams started running."

After launching on July 5, the petition has 1,630 signatures with a goal of 2,500. Nikita added: "It's starting to gain interaction.

"We're just a small group of roller skaters really skating and blading, but we're not the only people using it. There are BMX bikers, there's skateboarders and scooters as well.

"It's one of those things that you don't need to be in a team to play. It's an Olympic sport now!

"It's recognised and important and popular. So yeah, we're hoping people come out and support indoor spaces for skating in Scotland."

Chris Richardson, Managing Director of Ambassador Investments Ltd, the Scottish owner of Ocean Terminal, commented: "Our £250 million vision for the redevelopment of Ocean Terminal is to create a community-led complex that prioritises the people who live and work in the local area, while securing a sustainable future for the centre.

"As we deliver that vision, businesses that held a temporary tenancy within the centre will move on, allowing long-term tenants to open their doors to the community and wider public in the coming months. These long-term tenancies are absolutely central to the future success of Ocean Terminal.

"We have ambitious plans for Ocean Terminal, and are committed to providing a wide leisure offering alongside community amenities and much-needed housing. This will mean significant change as we invest in the area and create a centre that is fit for the future.”
