West Ham United captain Declan Rice has spoken out on social media after missing the Hammers’ 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night.
For the first time since March 2022, West Ham skipper Rice missed a Premier League match and was among three players to be sent home just hours before kick-off due to illness, having travelled with the squad.
Rice, midfield partner Tomas Soucek and centre-back Nayef Aguerd were all forced to depart, with Moyes stating that two of the three may have had food poisoning, while the other has a suspected virus, with the same wave of illness affecting a member of staff too.

Rice explained ahead of the game that a sickness bug picked up on Tuesday night was behind his absence from the matchday 18.
“Gutted to be missing tonight’s match. Picked up a sickness bug yesterday and has carried on throughout the night/today. Wishing the boys the best of luck. Come on @WestHam,” Rice posted on his Instagram story, followed by an emoji of a love heart.
In the game, second half goals from Nathan Ake, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden sealed a 3-0 win, with Haaland’s 35th Premier League goal of the season seeing him break the all-time Premier League record for most goals scored in a season.
