The kickoff of the college football season means the return of Gus Johnson, as the veteran Fox Sports announcer announced his first game of the 2023 campaign Thursday night. Although the game between Nebraska and Minnesota was sloppy, it still provided some wild highlights for Johnson to excitedly describe.
Johnson’s first touchdown call of the season was a Nebraska score on a broken play, in which the Cornhuskers called a double-reverse pass that went from near-turnover to touchdown. The unorthodox score allowed Johnson to unleash a classic one-liner.
“Nebraska makes chicken salad!” Johnson exclaimed after the Cornhuskers scored despite completely botching the designed play call.

Nebraska’s touchdown was one of only two in the game, as Minnesota crossed the end zone later in the game. Then, the Golden Gophers won on a last-second field goal, allowing Johnson to show off his buzzer-beater excitement.
