GURUGRAM: A 28-year-old contractual worker was electrocuted while trying to dislodge an 11kv high-tension wire near the DHBVN office on MG Road on Wednesday.
Police said Sekh Chottu, who belonged to West Bengal and lived in Basai village of Gurugram, had been hired by a private company and was assigned the task to uproot an electricity pole. For that, he had to first dislodge an electric wire.
Chottu’s brother alleged Sekh Khairul, who filed a complaint for alleged negligence by the company’s engineer and contractor, told police that Chottu was asked to dislodge the high-tension wire by the company, which said it was safe because there was a power cut.
“My brother had scaled the pole after he was assured that there is no current because of a power cut. I was informed about the incident by my brother’s colleagues who were also on the spot,” Khairul said.
He said Chottu, who took the job two months ago, died on the spot after touching the live wire. “When I reached the spot, my brother’s dead body was lying on the ground… The lineman later disconnected the current,” Khairul said.
An FIR has been registered against the senior engineer and the contractor under sections 304 (whoever causes the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC at Civil Lines police station in the city.
“We are investigating the matter. We have also DHVBN officials regarding the incident,” said a police official.
This is not the first such incident in the past few weeks. Last month, a 26-year-old contractual labourer Rajesh died while trying to replace a damaged transformer in Sector 14 of the city. A sub-divisional officer (SDO), junior engineer and line supervisor of DHVBN were booked for death by negligence.
