Gurugram: A police constable was killed after his SUV was hit by a speeding vehicle while he was driving on the KMP Expressway while on his way to Jhajjar with his friend early on Friday morning.
The expressway is among the 36 “blackspots” listed as accident prone areas in the city by officials.
According to the police, Ashok Kumar (32) — posted as a constable at the Jamalpur Police Chowki in the city – was going to Jhajjar for some personal work with his friend Akhil (34) around 5.50am on Friday.
They were near the Farrukhanagar toll plaza when an unidentified vehicle hit their SUV from the back. Ashok lost control and the SUV crashed into a roadside barrier, police said.
Both of them were taken to the SGT Medical College and Hospital, where Ashok was declared brought dead. Akhil’s condition is said to be stable.
Sub-inspector Satish Kumar said they rushed a police team to the accident site after they were informed. “The injured were identified with the help of identity documents in their pockets and their families were informed,” he said.
A case was registered under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causes hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life) and 304A (death in accident) of the IPC at Farrukhnagar police station.
“We are scanning the CCTV footage of the area to identify the vehicle that hit the SUV,” the sub-inspector said.
Based on the accidents between 2019-2021, the road safety committee earlier this year identified 36 areas as “blackspots” in the city.
These include Rajiv Chowk, Kherki Daula, Narsinghpur cut, IMT Manesar Chowk, Bilaspur Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, KMP toll near Panchgaon, Panchgaon Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Ambience Mall, Pataudi market area, Shubhash Chowk, Signature Chowk, Vatika Chowk (Sohna Road), Sohna Bus Stand, MG Road Metro station, Farrukhnagar Chowk, and the Hamilton Court Road-Galleria, among others.
