Gunston licking lips at Lions' forward line potential

Jack Gunston jokes that he might go unnoticed in a Brisbane forward line he says can be the AFL's best.

But in reality the Hawthorn recruit wants to play a key role as a three-time premiership player showing the ropes to a Lions side on the cusp.

"That's the plan, hopefully go under the radar a little bit," he said ahead of Friday's practice match against Sydney.

"Joe (Daniher) and Hippy (Eric Hipwood) are there, but Charlie (Cameron), Zac Bailey and others ... it's a pretty dangerous forward line.

"A lot of targets, a lot of flair up there; I'm looking forward to being a part of it.

"The Lions team I've walked into now are up the pointy end striving to ... probably reach a grand final.

"We've got the talent to be one of the most dangerous forward lines in the competition but until we get out and do it, it's another thing."

Brisbane shook off an underwhelming recent finals record to reach the 2022 preliminary final before Geelong swatted them aside on the way to the flag.

Gunston and Western Bulldogs midfielder Josh Dunkley have added experience while their draft class headed by Will Ashcroft has loaded the Lions up for a genuine title shot.

The 31-year-old Gunston said he hadn't been burdened by the narrative that he was among the final pieces of the side's premiership puzzle.

"I've read it but we (he and Dunkley) don't feel any of that pressure," Gunston said.

"We've just come here to keep playing footy ... that's all outside noise for us. It just feels like we've come into a successful environment that's been ticking off things.

"I wanted to be part of that and hopefully tick off a few more."

Gunston has played 225 AFL games, debuting at Adelaide before spending 11 of his 13 seasons at the Hawks before joining to Brisbane.

"Loving it. Everything I'd imagine, the lifestyle change for me and freshen up in my career at this stage is really good," he said.
