Gulf of Carpentaria leader Murandoo Yanner appears in court on drug and fraud charges

A prominent community leader in the Gulf of Carpentaria has appeared in court charged with drug and fraud offences.

Murandoo Yanner was charged last week with five counts of supplying dangerous drugs, one count of possessing dangerous drugs, one count of fraud, one count of damaging evidence with intent, and one count of possessing anything used in the commission of crime.

Mr Yanner was remanded in custody on Monday and will reappear in Mount Isa Magistrates Court on Friday.

The 50-year-old is well-known in the region and has previously held positions on the Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and was also a director of the Gulf Region Aboriginal Corporation.
