AHMEDABAD: From a meagre Rs 5 lakh balance, the election expenditure account of the then Surendranagar district collector K Rajesh swelled up to Rs 5 crore in a span of nearly four years between 2018 and 2021. This is one of the ways in which Rajesh allegedly used the government machinery to commit corruption, said sources in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing graft charges against him.
The 2011-batch officer is alleged to have used the election expenditure account to deposit bribes he took to grant weapon licences as well as to sanction mining and sand quarry leases, said sources in the CBI and Surendranagar district administration.
