Guglielmo Vicario hits back at Callum Wilson as feud escalates after Tottenham thump Newcastle

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Newcastle striker Callum Wilson have continued their row off the pitch following Spurs' Premier League win on Sunday.

The two players clashed in heated scenes towards the end of Tottenham's emphatic 4-1 home victory, with Vicario appearing to pull faces at Wilson after he saved a tame header from the England forward.

Such antics clearly riled Wilson, who accused Vicario of showing a "lack of respect" in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, likening it to the incident that saw Three Lions team-mate Jordan Pickford become embroiled in a furious incident with the Newcastle players after Everton's 3-0 win at Goodison Park on Thursday night.

"There’s a way to win, isn’t there," he said. "I think we’ve seen it in the week, where Everton were winning and Pickford was messing around.

"The goalkeeper [Vicario], for the header, he starts pulling faces and messing around and it’s just a lack of respect I thought, but I've said my piece. We’re grown men and we move on."

Vicario subsequently quoted Wilson's Sky Sports interview with a post on his Instagram Stories which read: "Respect is given... to everyone that respects me!"

Sunday's win was a crucial one for Tottenham, who busted out of an alarming recent slump with their first top-flight victory since October 27 to move fifth thanks to a brace from the resurgent Richarlison and further efforts from captain Heung-min Son - fit to start after an injury scare suffered in the home derby defeat by London rivals West Ham on Thursday - and Destiny Udogie, who kicked off the rout with his first Spurs goal.

Ange Postecoglou's side had started a new era in fantastic fashion before an injury crisis and dismal run that saw them set an unwanted record as the first Premier League team ever to take the lead in five consecutive matches and fail to win any of them.

Vicario has been crucial for Tottenham since joining from Serie A side Empoli in a £17.2million deal in June, quickly establishing himself as one of the league's top goalkeepers following the decline of long-serving former captain Hugo Lloris.

Wilson, meanwhile, has scored seven goals in 15 matches across all competitions so far this term for a Newcastle side that had defied an ongoing injury crisis of their own to keep flying high under Eddie Howe, but now look to be seriously running out of steam after back-to-back heavy losses that have dropped them down to seventh with a crucial Champions League tie against AC Milan coming next.
