Guardiola Clarifies Light-Hearted Remark Following Champions League Match

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reacts during the Champions League opening phase soccer match between Manchester City and Feyenoord at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, Tuesday, Nov. 26

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed a light-hearted remark he made after his team's recent Champions League match against Feyenoord. Guardiola, who sported a cut on his nose and scratches on his head during the post-match press conference, jokingly mentioned wanting to harm himself in reference to the marks on his face.

However, Guardiola later clarified his comment, stating that it was not intended to make light of the serious issue of self-harm. He emphasized his awareness of the challenges faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues and encouraged those in need to seek help, suggesting contacting organizations like Samaritans.

City's recent performance has been under scrutiny, with the team experiencing a string of defeats, including a 3-3 draw against Feyenoord where they conceded three late goals. This marked the first time in Champions League history that a team lost a three-goal lead after the 75th minute and failed to secure a victory.

The team's struggles continued with a 4-0 loss to Tottenham, setting up a crucial match against Premier League leaders Liverpool. Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan acknowledged the significance of the upcoming game, recognizing that a loss would widen the gap between City and Liverpool to 11 points, posing a significant challenge for the reigning champions.

Gundogan highlighted the tough nature of facing Liverpool at Anfield and acknowledged the formidable form of the opposition. With City navigating a challenging season, the match against Liverpool is seen as a critical juncture in their title defense.

As City prepares for the tough test ahead, Guardiola and his team are focused on overcoming their recent setbacks and regaining momentum in the Premier League.
