Early details about "Grand Theft Auto 6" are allowing fans to think about what is expected to come. Rockstar Games might have pushed realism too far this time.
The game is already one of the most anticipated releases in years. But some newly revealed gameplay details have fans wondering if the series is becoming too serious.
Rockstar has always filled its games with small details. "GTA 6" appears ready to take that approach even further.
'GTA 6' Will Make Guns More Realistic
One major change involves how NPCs react to weapons.
Rockstar co-development lead Rob Nelson explained that people in Vice City will react differently depending on how players carry their guns.
Grand Theft Auto VI will not allow players to bring a whole arsenal

You can only carry two concealed handguns, and two long guns, with one held and the other strapped to your back pic.twitter.com/mPOkqin3BU
A long gun strapped to a player's back may not cause much concern. Holding one in your hands, however, can make nearby NPCs move away.
Carrying several weapons can also change their reactions.
Police will respond as well. Officers may issue a warning if they see a player carrying a weapon. Things can escalate if the player holds a long gun with both hands in a way that suggests they are ready to fire.
This is a major change from "GTA 5." In that game, players could pull out a shotgun in front of people without much reaction.
Rockstar says that approach no longer fits the level of behavioral detail planned for "GTA 6," especially now that there's a new criminal profile system.
GTA 6 Adds Car Refueling
Weapons are not the only part of "GTA 6" getting a realism upgrade. Players will also need to watch their vehicle's fuel.
I love that they added refueling to GTA 6

Imagine being chased by the cops and then suddenly your gas runs out near the swamps, so now you have to ditch the car and run through the swamps, dodging alligators AND cops.

Gas stations will allow players to refuel and repair their cars. Nelson said refueling should take about 10 seconds and typically will not cost much.
Some players see the feature as unnecessary. Others believe it could create more variety during gameplay.
For example, running out of fuel during a getaway could force players to abandon their vehicle and find another way to escape.
Rockstar Wants Realism Without Losing Fun
The debate goes beyond guns and fuel, according to IGN.
"GTA 6" will reportedly include more detailed characters, a more lifelike Vice City, and systems that track how Jason and Lucia are doing.
Even sleep can affect certain character attributes. Rockstar also considered making players buy groceries to keep their refrigerators stocked, although that feature was eventually removed.
The studio appears aware of the challenge.
Rockstar has to balance realism with convenience. Too little realism could make the world feel shallow. Too much could turn simple activities into chores.
That balance has already divided fans.
Some want "GTA 6" to deliver the same immersive experience that made "Red Dead Redemption 2" so popular. Others worry that too many realistic mechanics could slow down the chaos that defines "Grand Theft Auto."
GTA 6 Faces a Familiar Question
"GTA 6" has generated plenty of discussion ahead of its November 19 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Based on the new reports, the new realism-focused features could make Vice City feel more alive than ever.
But Rockstar still has one important task. It needs to make sure realism supports the fun instead of getting in its way.
For many fans, immersion sounds great. They simply do not want "GTA 6" to become so realistic that playing it feels like work.
