'GTA 6' Is Worth Much More Than $80, Says Analyst: 'They Should Be Charging Like $200 For This Game'

Rockstar Games' decision to price "Grand Theft Auto 6" (GTA 6) at $80 has become controversial among gamers.

While some players criticized the higher-than-usual price tag, others expected Rockstar's long-awaited blockbuster to cost even more. Now, an industry analyst argues that the publisher significantly undervalued what could become one of the biggest game releases of all time.

The discussion comes as anticipation for "GTA 6" continues to build ahead of its scheduled launch, with fans closely following every update on pricing, editions, and gameplay.

Analyst Believes 'GTA 6' Is Worth $200

During an interview with TBPN, Stratechery founder Ben Thompson argued that Rockstar could have priced GTA 6 at around $200 without diminishing its value. In his view, even the game's $100 Ultimate Edition does not fully reflect the scale of the project.

Thompson described "GTA 6" as one of the most ambitious games ever created, pointing to the years of development and the thousands of developers involved in building the title. He also suggested that the game represents one of the last major AAA productions completed largely before generative AI became widely adopted in game development.

According to Thompson, "GTA 6" showcases the craftsmanship and human effort that defined traditional blockbuster game production.

"Rockstar is charging way too little for this game. They should be charging like $200 for this game."

'GTA 6' Development Costs Continue to Fuel Pricing Debate

Rockstar officially confirmed that the standard edition of "GTA 6" will cost $80, while the Ultimate Edition will retail for $100. The announcement followed months of speculation that the publisher might introduce an even higher price point.

Although Rockstar has not disclosed the game's development budget, industry estimates have placed the combined production and marketing costs between $1 billion and $2 billion, potentially making the upcoming game one of the most expensive entertainment projects ever created.

Despite these enormous costs, many analysts believe Rockstar deliberately avoided pricing the game above $80 to maximize accessibility and encourage strong launch sales, per IGN.

Rockstar Focuses on Long-Term Revenue

Charging $100 or even $200 for the base game may have increased initial revenue, but it could also have discouraged millions of potential buyers.

Many industry observers believe Rockstar's strategy is centered on building the largest possible player base during launch.

A wider audience would strengthen the company's long-term revenue opportunities through downloadable content, future expansions, and the eventual release of the next version of "GTA Online," which is expected to follow the highly successful business model established by "Grand Theft Auto 5."

Thompson acknowledged that he would personally pay $200 for "GTA 6" simply to support a project of its scale, though he also recognized that most players would likely be unwilling to spend that amount.

'GTA 6' Hype Continues to Grow

Recent screenshots have impressed fans with their visual fidelity, while details about the game's physical editions have generated fresh discussion.

Rockstar has confirmed that physical retail versions will include a download code instead of a game disc, showing the gaming industry's continued shift toward digital distribution. The decision disappointed some collectors who had hoped for a traditional disc release.

'GTA 6' Remains Gaming's Most Anticipated Release

Whether $80 is considered expensive or a bargain, "GTA 6" remains one of the most anticipated games in history.

While opinions differ on what the game should cost, Rockstar appears focused on balancing premium pricing with market appeal.
