Rockstar Games has confirmed the first real gameplay details for "Grand Theft Auto VI," and they lean far more into role-playing territory than fans might have expected.
The details came through an exclusive deep dive, giving players their clearest look yet at how life as protagonists Jason and Lucia will actually feel outside of missions and shootouts.
'GTA 6' Gameplay Gets RPG Mechanics
According to Dazed magazine's cover story, "Grand Theft Auto VI" will let food, exercise, and sleep visibly shape how Jason and Lucia look throughout the game. Food affects the pair's weight, while exercising visibly builds and tones their muscles, according to Rockstar's own description shared with the outlet.
Spending an extended stretch away from a bed, whether from running from police or going on a multi-day bender, will also show up physically on both characters.
Dazed compared the effect to "The Picture of Dorian Gray," describing how a player's habits and choices end up written directly onto the appearance of Jason and Lucia rather than staying hidden in the background.
That kind of body-altering interactivity marks a real return for the franchise, since "Grand Theft Auto IV" and "Grand Theft Auto V" had both dropped the weight and exercise systems that originally appeared in "San Andreas."
Rockstar Confirms First 'GTA VI' Details
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained the thinking behind bringing these systems back.
He said the studio looks back at its previous games with a critical eye, examining where it wants to evolve based on what it did not do as well as it would have liked, whether due to time, resources, technological limitations, or simply not considering something as fully as it could have at the time.
According to IGN, Nelson also spoke to the studio's broader goal with these systems, saying Rockstar wants to enable as much self-expression as possible without losing the essence of the characters themselves. Beyond the physical changes tied to eating, exercising, and sleeping, Dazed also confirmed a working in-game social media feed will be part of the experience.
This will go alongside the return of character switching, letting players control Jason and Lucia together as a couple or split them up entirely, swapping mid-mission between driving as one and scrolling through a phone as the other.
What to Expect From 'GTA VI'
Dazed frames the overall story as a Bonnie and Clyde-style narrative, with Rockstar confirming that player choices carry real repercussions for Jason and Lucia's relationship as the story unfolds. That framing suggests these RPG-style systems tie directly into the emotional core of the game rather than existing as a separate side mechanic layered on top.
The full Dazed autumn 2026 issue containing the complete deep dive goes on sale September 10, while the first extended gameplay look at "Grand Theft Auto VI" is set to premiere on Netflix.
Rockstar's own "Grand Theft Auto VI" remains scheduled to launch November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, giving fans a growing stream of confirmed details to dig through in the months leading up to release.
