NEW DELHI: A sizzling maiden IPL century from Shumban Gill was followed by a Mohammed Shami carnage with the new ball as defending champions Gujarat Titans laughed their way to the playoffs, becoming the first team to qualify for the knock-outs. A clinical 34-run win over a hapless Sunrisers Hyderabad also assured Titans of a top-two finish.
Firing his first ever ton of the league, Gill dazzled with a 58-ball 101 to light up the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as he single-handedly lifted Titans to a solid 188 for 9 despite a late comeback by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (5 for 30). Chasing a steep total, Sunrisers had another forgettable outing with the bat and they finished at 154 for 9.
Shami was the wrecker-in-chief for the hosts as the veteran's incredible spell with the new ball sealed the fate of the game before the halfway mark. Heinrich Klaasen did score a resilient 64 but the visitors were never in the chase after being reduced to 49 for 6 in the seventh over.
