The crew of a fishing boat that capsized off the coast of Wales killing three people had been pushed hard in search of greater yields, investigators who investigated the tragedy found. Skipper Carl McGrath demanded huge amounts from his inexperienced crew.
They worked hard in cramped conditions and this need to make a decent living from the sea was to have tragic consequences. On January 27, 2021, the Nicola Faith capsized and sank 1.9 miles north of Rhos-on-Sea with the loss of Mr McGrath and his two crew, Ross Ballantine and Alan Minard. A report has found that the cause of the tragedy was the vessel being overloaded.
North Wales Live reported that aged 34, Mr McGrath had been the boat’s skipper for some three years. Previously a builder and steel fabricator, he had had no fishing experience prior to skippering the Nicola Faith.
