Growing firms take up new space at Newcastle's business hub Hoults Yard

Two consultancy firms have moved into new offices at Newcastle's Hoults Yard as part of expansion moves.

Tyneside medical market access consultancy Maverex has moved into larger offices after at Hoults Yard for the third time in as many years.

The firm, which works with global pharmaceutical and medical device companies such as AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim and Nestle, has grown its team from three to 21 in the time it has been at Hoults Yard.

Antony Wright, director of health economic models and applications at Maverex, said: “2021 was another good year for us and our expansion led to the need for larger offices. Our new space at Hoults Yard allows us to focus on the future – we have plenty of room for further growth and are currently recruiting for more positions.

“We work across all diseases, from oncology and cerebrovascular disease to infectious and respiratory diseases, supporting our clients to prepare for launching to a global market.

“Newcastle is establishing itself as a UK hub in our sector and it’s a great place to work. The team is very happy at the Yard, so we didn’t look anywhere else once we’d taken the decision to move to larger offices,” said Antony. “And besides, Ouseburn has also recently been voted one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world by TimeOut. It’s a wonderful place to be.

“It’s a highly-specialised sector and it’s helpful to us to be close to the region’s universities – we tend to recruit at the science PhD level. Our team includes health economists, epidemiologists, market access specialists, modellers, statisticians and medical writers."

Maverex said its growth is down to a mixture of new clients, repeat business and referrals.

Laura Goldston, manager at HyHubs, which incorporates Hoults Yard, Haylofts in Newcastle city centre and Hypoint in Gateshead, said: “It’s great to see Maverex’s growth - we have a host of clients who flex their size over the years. Lots of them are in growth, which is great news for the region."

Meanwhile Scottish structural and civil engineering consultancy David Narro Associates has chosen Hoults Yard as the site of its first base in England.

The business also operates from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Inverness and Aberdeen and has worked on projects such as the Glasgow School of Art and the Borders Distillery in Hawick.

David Narro Associates' managing director, Ben Adam, said; “I’m delighted the Newcastle base has opened, as we’ve been considering expanding our presence to England for some time.

“There’s a great surge of development in the region, which ties in really well with the architectural engineering side of our business. It’s also a region with an abundance of historic properties and estates, and we believe our expertise in conservation and refurbishment will be a great asset to local architects, developers and property owners.”

The new Newcastle office is manned by senior structural engineers Bill Calder and Jenn Hogarth - with a structural technician to join in the coming weeks.

Mr Calder said: "I’m really excited at the opportunity to build David Narro Associates' presence in the north east of England. We’ve provided engineering consultancy to architects and developers on multiple projects in the area over the years, but this work has been done from our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices.

“Now that we’re building a team locally, with a physical office here in Newcastle, we’ll be much better placed to work collaboratively with our project partners– something we really pride ourselves on.

“Although David Narro is a Scottish company, both Jenn and I have considerable knowledge and experience of the north east – as well as some great contacts."
