Two leading AI models have shown sharply opposing political preferences when asked to recommend candidates in the 2026 US midterm elections. SpaceXAI's Grok 4.7 recommended Republican candidates in 92% of its answers, while OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol selected Democratic candidates in 97%, according to a new study.
The research, conducted by Convovo, a conversational AI research and design studio led by Cornell University professor Tapan Parikh, examined nearly 500 US congressional and gubernatorial races. When prompted through their APIs to name one candidate, the two AI models selected the same candidate in fewer than 10% of races.
