Grieving family distraught as child's grave set on fire in disturbing attack as gardai investigate

Gardai are investigating after the grave of a young child who died of an asthma attack was deliberately set on fire.

Shocking images have emerged of the aftermath of a blaze on floral tributes and other items that were placed on the grave of tragic child Kyle Finnegan (12) - who lost his life in 2018.

The shocking attack on the young child’s grave happened on Thursday night - leaving family members distraught.

In a Facebook post one person posted: “You will never have an hour’s luck you dirty dogs.”

And speaking to this paper, local councillor Dermot Richardson said the Finnegan family were devastated.

“People are shocked that the grave of a young kid can be damaged in this way. The family are absolutely devastated.

“Anyone with information should contact Tallaght Garda Station.”

Meanwhile a spokesperson for an Garda Siochana confirmed that the incident is being investigated as one of suspected criminal damage.

“Gardaí received a report of an incident of criminal damage that occurred in the Bohernabreena area of Tallaght, Co Dublin at approximately 7pm, Thursday, 25th of May 2023.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing,” a spokesperson said.

Tragic Kyle died of a suspected asthma attack in September 2018.

At the time his heartbroken mother told how he had tears "streaming down his face" as she desperately tried to save his life.

The talented footballer was at his grandmother's house with his older brother Calvin when he collapsed and couldn't breathe.

His mum Joanne said at the time: "I had picked Kyle up from school and dropped him to his nanny, and later he came down the stairs and told Calvin he couldn't breathe.

"Everyone was running down the street trying to help and I ran down from where I work and I started pressing on his chest.

"He kind of jumped and opened his eyes and looked at me. The tears were streaming down his face. I said 'Please don't go' but his eyes closed again."

Joanne said Kyle suffered with asthma since a very young child but had never experienced an attack similar to this. She has also called on more people to be aware of the illness and its potential threats.

"I got him back but I couldn't keep him. I keep thinking it's a big, bad dream.

"Kyle has had asthma since he was four years old, and he has had a few attack, but never anything like this.

"People need to be more aware."

A minute's silence was held at football matches around the county following his passing, to pay respect to the young man, who was a big Shamrock Rovers fan.
