Greta Thunberg fined over Swedish climate protest

Greta Thunberg has been fined after being found guilty of disobeying police orders during an anti-oil protest in Malmo last month.

The climate activist was detained with other protesters after they stopped traffic in the oil terminal of the Swedish city’s port on June 19.

She was charged because she refused to comply with police orders to leave the scene during the protest, according to prosecutors.

Ms Thunberg admitted that she had disobeyed the police order but pleaded not guilty and said that she was acting out of necessity.

“My actions are justifiable,” Ms Thunberg told the court, according to the Sydsvenskan newspaper. “I believe that we are in an emergency that threatens life, health and property. Countless people and communities are at risk both in the short term and in the long term.”

The fine will be based on Thunberg’s reported income and it was not immediately clear how much she would have to pay.

The activist, 20, who began her school strike for climate at the age of 15 in Stockholm and rose to international prominence through the Fridays for Future youth climate movement, was detained with three others.

The four were part of a group of about 20 protesters blocking the road and climbing on tankers to stop them entering or leaving the terminal.

The protesters were dragged away from the scene because they “did not obey” individual police instructions to move off the road, police said.
